Disgusted and Tired!

I have been reading a lot of articles with regards to the Rape and horrific murder of Jyothi in Delhi and I didnt really didnt want to write about it. It felt a lot like hitting my head on a brick wall.

But my disgust to the reaction by many men and some women would not let me keep quiet.
They all seem to be universally of the opinion that any woman who gets raped asks for it. A friend said that the rape is by itself not really a big deal, it is the girl’s murder that must be emphasized. Not a BIG DEAL?

I was asked not to be Over-emotional when I spoke against the existing mentality. When I said that it takes a woman in an indian city, to be pawed and abused on a daily basis, to understand the depth of pain that every woman faces. My words were obviously ignored and went unheard. Because after all I was being over-emotional about something that is not really related to me.

Despite my best belief against anything good coming out of this, there is a little hope in my mind that maybe, just maybe this brave girl’s death might be the catalyst that is required to make our country a safer place for women. But some of the reactions, the police treatment of the protestors and the government are trying their hardest to bludgeon that hope to death.

I have been told time and again that women just claim rape to get out of trouble. Apparently a woman can never be raped, it is always consensual. They are misusing the law (though the way police treat a victim, I am not sure why any one would want to misuse that law). I am sure there have been cases like that.. But this is like the example of Draupadi. Everytime you talk about polygamy, pat comes the reply that Draupadi had 5 husbands too. But see Draupadi is the only woman in ALL of the hindu mythologies to have more than 1 husband, while 99.9% of the men had multiple wives. She was the exception to the rule, rather than the rule itself, just like these women.

Its always the way she is dressed, the time she goes out, the company she keeps, the place she visited that are the reason for her getting abused. NEVER NEVER NEVER the perpetrator himself. He is a poor innocent guy who was enticed by her. And ofcourse how can we forget. Its all a media hype. nothing at all actually happened.

I have not said anything different or better than any of the other more erudite folks have said. But it feels good to spew out the disgust at some of my heartless countrymen.

Do any of you feel like women need to go through another freedom fight? Looks like 1947 Aug 15 was only for men. Sigh!

Note: I read this great article by a gentleman in IHM, that says maybe all is not lost.

HNY and Happy Pongal

Hello All and a very Happy New Year!

How has the new year been treating y’all?

I started it with a Bang.. literally! Was standing with the thousands of toronto-vasis at midnight in the Nathan Phillips square, freezing but still revved up to see the firecrackers welcome the new year.

But since then it has been one (mis)adventure after another. 😛

=> The subway station was soo crowded, early 1st morning, that we could not even get into the station. So smart gals that we are, VM and I, decided to walk to the next station and get into the train.. Only we didn’t realize we were walking on the wrong road until we had walked for some 20 minutes. But we did have fun playing in the huge drifts of snow on the way.

=> I was sooo looking forward to my first snow. I thrilled to see the flakes fall on me the first time. My client was very amused at my expression of wonder when I stopped working to see snow fall.

=> This was of course the first few days. And then once there was enough snow piled up, the roads were a slushy mess. The winds were brrr cold. The cars were going fast on the roads and splatting mess on the pedestrians. Shoes were so messy, one could not go into the house wearing them. Cleaning shoes everyday itself was a major pain and the worst of lot was that the snow in front of my house (my house being the only one in the whole road which had snow un-shovelled) had turned into ice and .. did I not say I started the year with a bang?

=> There was no point buying new clothes during the huge sale during the boxing day (not that it stopped me from buying.. and I also got this super cute Guess watch :-D) because nothing is seen by anyone. We are so covered by layers after layers of clothing, that it does not matter what you wear.

=> But it has not been all bad either.. I shifted to a bigger place. And when you don’t have to walk on it, the snow is ever soooo pretty. Being in downtown they clear off the sidewalks and the roads a minute after it snows. And I still walk out on the sidewalks instead of the underground Paths.. just to breathe in the fresh, ice cold air.

=> I have gotten so much more comfy with the underground path here. I used to feel like I was left alone in a maze the first few months… but now I am happy to say I don’t get lost much at all. Feels like a huge accomplishment.

=> The gal who used to shiver when the temp reaches 22deg in Chennai is so comfy with -16 deg. And how cool is that (pun intended). My parents are still disbelieving that I am ok with the weather here. But it really has been an experience for me.

=> Did I tell you that I went to Niagara over the weekend to see the festival of lights? The first time was almost a divine experience for me. But I guess I got spoiled for the second one. These Canadians are a wizard with lights. Where you get to see Ganesha, Durga and Balaji in huge colorful lights in Chennai during festival season, here we get to see flowers, animals, cartoon characters and very pretty decorations. Whole roads and cities filled with lights.

=> Speaking of divine experiences, had lunch at Saravana Bhavan… oh Yummm!!!!!!

That’s what has been happening in life the last coupla months. Also folks Happy Pongal!

Every apartment and house that I have visited here has some plants growing on pots, creeping up walls, whatever.

Even the pig sty where I spent couple of months had some plants which the gals diligently watered.

My friends get so much pleasure buying all these cute pots and bottles to stick plants into and paintings and pictures and stickers for their walls.

Me! The only thing I got for my room was a sticky hook from which to hang my coat 😛

Of course being a lazy person helps. Plants require water and to be correctly placed for Sun. Wall hangings need to be dusted and kept clean.

Even my room back in Chennai only has a couple of poster that are stuck to the wall and does not require any dusting. Oh! And a temperamental clock, which does not like to be touched and runs fast or slow based on the weather, but hardly ever shows the right time

While I really do have a lost of respect for my friends’ interest in beautifying their abodes. They don’t really do anything for me. Give me body decorations to house decorations anytime!

And now its Christmas time and the whole town is getting decorated. My office lobby and actually all the office lobbies in this area are twinkling with lights and pine trees.

The path also looks ever so pretty. Been wanting to take photos of it, but feel a little awkward doing it by myself.

Guess I will have to pull VA or TJ along with me. Will take photos and upload soon…

Santa Claus Parade

Being a relatively new country, Canada does not have many festivals and functions to celebrate, so they make up stuff to enjoy.

For eg:- In February they have a family day, there really is no specific reason for this holiday except that there are no holidays in all of February and as it’s the coldest month folks would be irritated if they do not get a break.

They also had the 108th Santa parade, the longest running parade in the world on Nov 18th. Santa along with Mrs. Santa and many cartoon characters and elves paraded down the Toronto Downtown and it was broadcast live all across on TV too.

The day before on Nov 17th, it was the Cavalcade of lights, when TorontoCity hall was lighted with a show of dazzling firecrackers, officially opening the lighting of the Path and the City for Christmas. Yes Folks! Now that everything else is over, Toronto is all ready for Christmas.

On Movies and More…

When I was working all these weekends and late hours, the one constant companion I had was movies. I did see Skyfall in the theater and really liked it, despite Daniel Craig. I didn’t like the end. I am a big fan of M, don’t want a new one L

I surprisingly liked Thuppaki. Vijay has actually tried to act and despite the romance placed in all the wrong places it was an enjoyable entertainer.

Now Jab Tak Hai Jaan. I could not see it for more than half the movie. As Baradwaj Rangan says “ [Shahrukh] … looks too old, too tired to be doing what he did with Kajol in Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. And what can we say of Kaif? She’s staggeringly ineffective, and she gets countless close-ups to offer us repeated proof of the fact. How can such a heavy role be entrusted to someone so lifeless in front of the camera? She’s like a little girl with an Easy-Bake Oven trying to manufacture loaves for multitudes gathered on a mountaintop. That’s a miracle beyond even Sir Jesus.”

There was a charm to Shah rukh (along with his overweening arrogance) in K3G or DDLJ when he romanced the heroine. The charm seems to have fallen along the way and he just looks arrogant and as Baradwaj Rangan says too old and tired to be romancing Kaif.  The movie basically fell between Blah! and Gah!

Moving on, another surprising entertainer was Son of Sardar. It’s a comedy and entertainer. A total no brainer, requires no emotional interference. Just sit through and enjoy the movie. Surprising because I cannot stand Ajay Devgn in any of his avatars and Sonakshi Sinha, the less said the better. Juhi Chawla and Sanjay Dutt were just too cute.

I saw Aiyyaa and Student of the year too, and I don’t even want to talk about it. I mean, seriously!!!

I am home…

I know I have gone incommunicado for what (at least to me) feels like ages and ages but I am back now.

Before anything else, I need to say it snowed today. First time for me .. well! almost first time. I first thought kids were throwing some confetti or something from the top of a nearby building and then when a few fell on me.. I was so thrilled. I am sure the folks standing at the signal, with me, waiting to cross the road were wondering why I was looking at the sky and grinning like crazy. Oh! Who cares!

Anyways coming back to my excuses for going invisible. every time something happened I would think of how it would translate in here as a post but would not find the time to do so.

It has been an unbelievably stressful and hectic couple of months. Have worked without even weekend breaks for  almost a month. 18-20 hour days were the norm until I literally ground myself to a stop becoz my brain was a mush that was not doing anymore thinking.

Had stopped talking much to parents and actually refused friends on outings (now friends will know how extremely rare it is for me to refuse to go anywhere).

But it has not all been bad.

Wore Salwar for Diwali to work and it was fun.. considering that it has been nearly 5 months since I wore one. Some one at work had brought somewhat stale samosas, and kaaju katli and varieties of other sweets and I understood that Canadians are crazy about samosas. They loved it.

So two days later when we had another party for them we bought loads of samosas, mixtures, murukkus and just 1 sweet, coz they find our sweets to sweet and I can totally agree on that. Fun was had by all and they asked us to do this kind of stuff again. J

My shopping (and I have to say I had been keeping the Canadian economy very healthy) has reduced and has almost ground to a stop, basically because I seem to have bought out all the shops anyways 😀

For the first time I hated Canada yesterday when my housemates messed with the thermostat and the temperature dropped to 13C and the vents were blowing cold air. None of us knew how to correct it and was stuck freezing my ass off for over 10 hours huddling inside my comforter. Then some of the other housemates returned and kindly set it back upto 30C. It was now freaky hot but I was not going to complain. Oh! To have some Chennai heat!

Its funny how lonely I felt in the company of others and how much I enjoy being alone.

Same words but such difference in meaning.
