Its funny how lonely I felt in the company of others and how much I enjoy being alone.

Same words but such difference in meaning.

English Vinglish

Loved the movie. Saw it twice already. Became a fan of Sridevi all over again.

There were three things in the movie that really struck me

1. The way husbands put down their wives and never realize that it hurts their sensitivities. I don’t know if wives do the same to husbands but I have never seen one do so in front of me. Starting with my own family, to friends’ and relatives’ families, I see so many examples of the way husbands make “jokes” about the wives that subtly and not so subtly puts them down. Comparison with other ladies, teasing about their lack of knowledge or talent etc. I have wondered if its because they are totally without any idea of how its hurting their wives or because they know their wives will not retaliate in front of others and so don’t care.

2. Mom has always felt that her English was not good enough. I have never been very sensitive to her feelings in this regard, since I never felt it was any big lack in her. But Sridevi has done a wonderful job of showcasing it.
She asks her daughter’s English teacher if her daughter is doing well in English and that scene reminded me of my mom’s desire for me to learn the language well. [I called mom after seeing the movie and asked her if I had ever been as much a snot as Sridevi’s daughter 😛 ]
It was also especially an interesting time for me to see this movie, since I was chatting with my house mates just yesterday on this subject. They are from Iran, Germany and Taiwan and they find communicating in this country very difficult. They think in their mother language and then convert it into English, by which time the words fail them.

3. Sridevi says “I am not looking for love, I am looking for some respect”. The respect of the people around a person makes or breaks their self confidence. I have especially seen that the support and respect from one’s spouse is of paramount importance and next comes the children. Sridevi thanks Laurent for making her feel good about herself at the end of the movie and it makes her husband sit up and notice. But this is a movie… how many women have a Laurent in their lives to make them feel good, in reality?

4. OK not three things, but four.. speaking of Laurent:- Considered one of the 11 most exciting European actors, according to Wikipedia. Mehdi Nebbou is ever so cute as Laurent, the French cook. The movie can be watched as much for him as for Sridevi’s understated and spot on acting 🙂 . I only wish I understood what he keeps saying in french 😦

If you have not seen the movie yet. What are you waiting for? Go… Watch!

Atishoo atishoo! we all Fall down

I have said it before and I will say it again that God was in a very indulgent mood when he created Canada. What an absolutely beautiful place!
I have seen the fall colors in US. But nothing quite catches up to this place.

I decide to forego dinner for sleep and crash in my new bed.. all out tired when I get a call from RJ at around 11 PM, sounding annoyingly cheerful! Wants to know if I would like to pick up some more friends and go to the Algonquin provincial park to see the fall colors. After discarding murder and mayhem for missing on my sleep, I agreed to go.

We were supposed to meet between 8 and 9 and so I get up at 6.30 and get ready and bleary eyed.. wait and wait and wait. RJ arrives at 11 and I am stark raving mad and in no mood to go anywhere.. But we still do go and Thank God!

I am not sure I appreciated the beauty the last time I got to see Fall, but appreciate it, this time, I did.

A person gets to see every shade of color between Yellow to Orange to Deep Red and not one of it is a flower. The leaves themselves turn these colors before they are shed. Maple leaves being the most colorful of the lot.

The beauty was so awe-inspiring that even a motor mouth like me was forced into silence and to just be.

A long drive, great music and beauty all around. What more could a person ask for?!

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

RJ quoted this Robert Frost while we were trekking up a trail in park and somehow it just seemed very apt

What a week!

Started last Friday, the 21st, with shopping at the famour Eaton Center, a very pretty shirt and pair of pants. followed by a much required visit to the beauty parlour the next day.

VA was probably sick and tired of seeing my face but she still invited me home again for the weekend.
And on 23rd evening, walked down the road to LCBO in the rain in our new wellington boots (atlast!) only to see it was closed :-).
I got to eat my first home made pizza and muffins.. made just for me .. and how cool is that? 🙂

Before I could float down from my cloud VA inundated me with gifts..
24th I got a cookiegram from Bro. A 20 inches cookie wishing me. It was soo yummy, you must have eaten it to believe it. I ate and ate and ate and still had a lot left over to give to all my friends and their families.

The week then passed in a blink of an eye and it was time to pack and move.
From a high rise, posh building with concierge  right smack in downtown, next to the CN tower and Rogers Center to this obscure little wooden house. Its a small room but I have it all to myself.
Yet to unpack.. ‘coz on Sunday  unlike any sane person who would have relaxed and unpacked.. I went on a drive down to Algonquin provincial park to see the fall color .. and That, my dear people, will be my next post!!!

First Home made pizza that I ever saw.. and All for ME!!!!
